It's Time To Ditch The BMI And The Link Between Obesity And Stress

Is It Time To Ditch The BMI As An Index Of Obesity?

Finally. We are finally hearing that the BMI classification doesn’t tell the full story of our health. Experts agree that fat distribution—especially deeper fat around internal organs—is a more significant risk factor for diabetes and heart disease than overall weight. Waist circumference, blood sugar, and lifestyle habits offer a clearer picture than BMI alone. I certainly use BMI as a screening tool; I am far more interested in knowing a patient's waist circumference (I calculate relative fat mass instead), along with other measurements such as HbA1C, cholesterol, blood pressure and sleep apnea risk. Assessed together, they paint a much clearer picture of our health than BMI alone. You can check out CBC's article here.

Connecting The Dots Between Obesity And Stress

There is more to obesity than a simple matter of diet and exercise. The body holds a deeper story—one shaped by past experiences. Stress can keep the nervous system in a state of defense, altering metabolism, digestion, and even how the body stores fat. This isn’t about blame or willpower; it’s about understanding that the body adapts to protect us, sometimes in ways that no longer serve our health. The good news is that by supporting nervous system regulation by fostering greater self-awareness and using tools like mindfulness and breathing — we can create safety in the body and shift toward greater balance and vitality. Healing isn’t just about losing weight; it’s about coming home to yourself in a way that feels safe and sustainable.

Quote Of the Issue

"How healthy we can be is constrained by our nervous system state, the invisible ceiling preventing us from experiencing healing and greater vitality. Breaking through this ceiling starts with recognizing that our nervous system is the middle man between health and disease, and intervention and treatment success". - Me

In other words, your health is limited by your nervous system, like an invisible ceiling that holds you back from feeling better. To break through, you first need to understand that your nervous system is the "middle man" between being sick and getting healthy—and whether treatments will actually work. When your nervous system feels safe and balanced, real healing becomes possible.

Hi! I'm Dr. Dominika Zarzeczny, ND

First inspired by the work of Dr. Gabor Mate, Dr. Dominika has focused much of her career on helping her patients connect the dots between early adversity and trauma and their impact on lifelong health and well-being. She knows that the reversal of chronic illness involves the nervous system, and so she has dedicated her practice to helping patients master their own nervous system to positively influence their mind and body, behaviours and ultimately health outcomes. Her explanation of disease doesn't pathologize or blame, but is nuanced, humanized and filled with hope. She trained with various psychologists and experts in the field of psychological trauma. She incorporates the principles of neuroscience, attachment theory, mindfulness, Polyvagal Theory and compassionate inquiry in her approach with patients. Combining these with her naturopathic training, she likes to say that she works at the intersection of science and human experience.
