Feeling Good Matters More Than Chasing Numbers

Feeling Good Matters More Than Chasing Numbers

It’s easy to get caught up in numbers - your weight, your lab report, the tidy column of “optimal” ranges, or even fitness goals. While these metrics are useful, they offer just snapshots. You can meet every target and still feel drained, anxious, or “off.”

How you feel is the most important guide you have. Your sense of well-being signals when something needs attention, even if your labs are “normal” or your weight is “on target.” Tracking energy, mood, sleep quality, and clarity of thought gives you insight that numbers alone cannot.

Use numbers as a tool, not a master. Let your body’s signals lead the way, and make adjustments based on how you actually feel.

Focusing on your experience - not just the data - creates a more sustainable path to true health.

On Statins? Your Muscle Health Is Still in Your Hands

A large UK Biobank study of nearly 300,000 participants found that long-term statin use is associated with greater declines in muscle strength and mass. Compared to non-users, statin users had a 25% reduction in grip strength and a 73% decrease in limb muscle mass - differences that remained even after adjusting for age, BMI, and underlying health conditions. While muscle loss occurs with aging, the decline was steeper in those taking statins.

Proposed mechanisms include impaired mitochondrial function, reduced CoQ10, decreased protein synthesis, and broader metabolic effects such as increased insulin resistance.

If statins remain part of your treatment plan, physical activity becomes essential. Regular strength training and daily movement are within your control and play a critical role in preserving muscle, maintaining metabolic health, and protecting long-term function.

Important Update: ISOlution Discontinued

For my patients to whom I have prescribed ISOlution whey protein, please note that this product has been discontinued as of March 13, 2026. This is due to a supply issue with a key ingredient, and the manufacturer was unable to find an alternative that met their quality standards.

If you are currently using ISOlution, I have been informed by the company, Enhanced Medical Nutrition, that a comparable option is available: Gruppo Nutrition “Raw” Whey Protein Isolate, which uses the same source material. I have not used this product myself and cannot speak to it at this time.

If you need support transitioning to this or another appropriate protein option, please reach out so we can ensure continuity in your plan.

Warmly,

Hi! I'm Dr. Dominika Zarzeczny, ND

First inspired by the work of Dr. Gabor Mate, Dr. Dominika has focused much of her career on helping her patients connect the dots between early adversity and trauma and their impact on lifelong health and well-being. She knows that the reversal of chronic illness involves the nervous system, and so she has dedicated her practice to helping patients master their own nervous system to positively influence their mind and body, behaviours and ultimately health outcomes. Her explanation of disease doesn't pathologize or blame, but is nuanced, humanized and filled with hope. She trained with various psychologists and experts in the field of psychological trauma. She incorporates the principles of neuroscience, attachment theory, mindfulness, Polyvagal Theory and compassionate inquiry in her approach with patients. Combining these with her naturopathic training, she likes to say that she works at the intersection of science and human experience.

Hi Reader , You've done the work. You have the plan — maybe even one we built together. The supplements, the sleep routine, the nutrition plan. And for a while, it helped. But somewhere along the way, something shifted. Maybe you notice that when you follow it perfectly, you feel okay, but the moment you slip, everything unravels. Or you've quietly stopped following it altogether, and the guilt of that has become its own kind of weight. Or you are following it, faithfully, and you've hit a...

In This Issue (< 3 min read) Iron Supplementation: Rethinking Frequency and Absorption In this week’s issue, I’m focusing on a practical but important topic: iron supplementation. When we don’t see the expected rise in ferritin, it’s worth looking closely at timing and other factors that can interfere with absorption before changing the type of iron, so I wanted to walk through this with you. Iron Supplementation: Rethinking Frequency and Absorption Evidence in the last several years shows...

In This Issue: How To Soften The Impact Of Rising Food Prices Should We Really Be Eating Raspberries In Winter? Return To Regular Office Hours How To Soften The Impact Of Rising Food Prices I want to offer a practical tip that may help navigate one of the ripple effects of the Middle Eastern conflict we are beginning to see: rising and fluctuating food prices. Modern food systems are highly global. Much of the produce we buy travels thousands of kilometres before arriving in Canadian grocery...
