What the Poorest Italian Can Teach Us About Food + The Temptations Of Ozempic

Ozempic Is Tempting, But Is It Skipping A Step?

It’s hard to ignore the promise of Ozempic. Quick weight loss. Controlled appetite. A shortcut, maybe, to feeling like yourself again.

And while it can be appropriate for certain individuals, for many, it’s putting the cart before the horse.

Here’s the truth: weight gain, diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, PCOS, and metabolic syndrome are not random. They’re symptoms of something deeper; a biochemical stressor that is insulin resistance which we must detoxify from.

When you're constantly bathed in insulin, your body gets locked in fat-storage mode, inflammation rises (and we can measure this), and your energy tanks.

As a naturopathic doctor who specializes in root-cause healing, stress physiology, and the science of the mind-body connection, I believe in going deeper. Because when we address the metabolic chaos at the root, your body changes shape, puffiness and water retention go away, and issues in your body begin to fix themselves.

If you're feeling frustrated, stuck, or like you've 'tried everything'… know this: your body isn't broken—it's just waiting for the right conditions to remember how to heal.

What the Poorest Italian Can Teach North Americans About Nourishment

It’s been said that the poorest Italian eats better than the richest North American.

What a striking irony in a culture obsessed with health and wellness. We count macros, demonize carbs, fear fat, and moralize sugar. We label food as “good” or “bad,” and then punish ourselves for getting it wrong. In our pursuit of health, we’ve turned nourishment into a battlefield of shame, rigidity, and restriction.

Meanwhile, in the back alley kitchens of Naples or the sun-drenched hills of Tuscany, the simplest meals are composed of locally grown foods, prepared with reverence and eaten with joy. There’s no obsession, no panic—just nourishment. Afterwards, the simple practice of going for a walk is undertaken, which we have just discovered in the West as something revolutionary.

Traditional cultures don’t follow food trends. They don’t ask, Is this keto? Is this clean? They ask: Is this local and fresh? What can I make with this?

What if we remembered that food is not a math problem to solve, but a relationship to tend?
To eat well is not to eat perfectly. It is to eat with presence.
The goal isn’t to control what you eat. It’s to restore your trust in the most ancient rhythm of your biology.
Not fear. But feast.
Not rules. But reverence.
Not perfection. But pleasure.
And in that space, well beyond the aisles of superfoods and the noise of diet culture, you just might find the most radical form of health: ease.

My New Favorite Snack: Nagi Bars

I recently stumbled upon a protein snack that I can’t help but share—Nagi Bars. Bite-sized, satisfying, and made with simple ingredients, they’ve quickly become a go-to in my day.

Nagi means “naked” in Polish, a nod to founder Justyna’s heritage and the brand’s philosophy of keeping things simple and uncomplicated. These bars are entirely plant-based, gluten-free, and contain 12g of protein each, perfect for a quick, blood-sugar-friendly snack that won’t weigh you down or leave you with a sugar crash.

They’re small but mighty, and best of all, they’re not overly sweet or so big you regret eating the whole thing. My personal favourite? Salted Caramel. It strikes that elusive balance of indulgence and nourishment.

Here’s what’s inside:

  1. Organic raw cashews
  2. Organic sunflower seeds
  3. Organic sprouted brown rice protein
  4. Organic brown rice syrup
  5. Organic coconut nectar
  6. Organic cocoa butter
  7. Organic date paste
  8. Organic cocoa powder
  9. Organic ground chia seeds
  10. Organic vanilla extract
  11. Sea salt

Justyna was kind enough to offer a discount code for this community: DOMINIKA10. If you try them, let me know your favourite flavour, I have a feeling you’ll be hooked.

Hi! I'm Dr. Dominika Zarzeczny, ND

First inspired by the work of Dr. Gabor Mate, Dr. Dominika has focused much of her career on helping her patients connect the dots between early adversity and trauma and their impact on lifelong health and well-being. She knows that the reversal of chronic illness involves the nervous system, and so she has dedicated her practice to helping patients master their own nervous system to positively influence their mind and body, behaviours and ultimately health outcomes. Her explanation of disease doesn't pathologize or blame, but is nuanced, humanized and filled with hope. She trained with various psychologists and experts in the field of psychological trauma. She incorporates the principles of neuroscience, attachment theory, mindfulness, Polyvagal Theory and compassionate inquiry in her approach with patients. Combining these with her naturopathic training, she likes to say that she works at the intersection of science and human experience.
